Commercial Gas Safety Inspection Services Explained

Was your business closed during lockdown? Are you still operating on reduced hours? If so, then it could be a good idea to have a commercial gas safety inspection carried out to ensure everything is working correctly. If you have gas appliances in your commercial premises, it’s essential to have them checked to ensure they are still safe before resuming trading or operating at full capacity.

If you are the owner of commercial premises it is your duty by law to ensure that any gas appliances are checked annually. Gas safety is your legal obligation, as stated by The Gas Safety Regulations 1998, to ensure the safety of any person who may enter your premises. If you do not carry out these checks in accordance with the regulations, not only will you be breaking the law but also putting your workers/customers at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or a gas explosion.

What Does a Commercial Gas Safety Inspection Entail?

A commercial gas safety inspection should be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, if they aren’t registered, they will be working illegally. During your inspection, the engineer will check every appliance is safe to use including:

  • Gas hobs and ovens in kitchens
  • Installations
  • Extraction systems
  • Pipework
  • Interlock systems

They’ll test that there are no gas leaks happening anywhere, the levels of CO and CO2 and how well protected the appliances and installations are. Having your checks carried out annually will also give you other benefits alongside safety. By having them done regularly you will increase the lifespan of your appliances as your engineer will be able to help prevent the risk of future failures or breakdowns. This will increase their reliability and give you peace of mind. Having it done when needed will also ensure that you are covered under the latest legal requirements.

When the inspection has been completed you will receive a gas safety certificate stating the details of the work carried out, any defects identified, and the actions that should now be taken. If you are a landlord and you are leasing out the premises to a commercial business, it is your responsibility to comply with the gas safety regulations or face prosecution or imprisonment.
